Your First Acupuncture Visit: What to Expect at My Body Story
A complete walkthrough of your first acupuncture appointment at our Los Angeles clinic, from how to prepare and what happens during the consultation to how you may feel afterward.

If you have never had acupuncture before, it is natural to feel a bit nervous about your first visit. At My Body Story Acupuncture & Conditioning Center in Los Angeles, we want you to feel comfortable and informed. Here is everything you need to know about your first appointment.
Before Your Visit
- Eat a light meal: it is best not to come on an empty stomach. Have a light meal or snack about an hour before your appointment.
- Wear comfortable clothing: loose-fitting clothes make it easier to access acupuncture points. We also provide gowns if needed.
- Prepare your medical history: bring a list of any medications you are taking and be ready to discuss your medical history.
During Your Initial Consultation
Your first visit typically lasts 60-75 minutes. Here is what to expect.
Health Assessment, 20-30 minutes
Our acupuncturist will conduct a thorough evaluation. This includes a discussion of your primary concerns and symptoms, a review of your medical history, a physical examination of the relevant areas, and traditional diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue assessment.
Treatment Plan Discussion
Based on the assessment, your acupuncturist will explain the recommended treatment approach, the expected number of sessions, what results you can anticipate, and any complementary therapies that may benefit you alongside your acupuncture treatment.
The Acupuncture Treatment
Needle Insertion
Very thin, sterile, single-use needles are gently inserted at specific points. Most patients feel minimal discomfort, often described as a slight tingling or dull ache at the insertion site.
Relaxation Period, 20-30 minutes
Once the needles are in place, you will rest comfortably. Many patients find this deeply relaxing, and some even fall asleep during the session.
Needle Removal
The needles are gently removed, and your acupuncturist may provide additional recommendations for the days ahead.
After Your Treatment
Most patients feel relaxed and energized after their first session. Some tips for after your visit:
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day
- Take note of any changes in your symptoms
